Rosenbauer America and the Dallas Fire Rescue Department have entered into an innovative partnership aimed at the joint further development of the PANTHER 6x6 electric through to series production. The pre-series vehicle will be delivered in mid-2025 and will operate at Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL), making it the first airport to receive a PANTHER 6x6 electric.  6-month test phase The Dallas Fire-Rescue Department plays an important role as a cooperation partner. During the approximately 6-month test phase, the vehicle will be put through its paces. Tests will include integration into daily operations, performance compared to the current fleet, and functionality in training operations. The insights gained are passed on to the product team and flow directly into further development. In 2022, Rosenbauer presented a series-ready concept vehicle of the PANTHER 6x6 electric at Interschutz in Hanover, Germany.   Like the models with combustion engines, the PANTHER 6x6 electric offers outstanding performance. It accelerates purely electrically from 0 to 50 mph in under 25 seconds. In 'Boost Mode', this acceleration can even be achieved in under 20 seconds. A low center of gravity and a chassis perfectly matched to the application also ensure outstanding driving dynamics in every situation. The water pump can also be operated electrically at full capacity (2370 gpm).  Electric drive platform The electric drive platform developed by Rosenbauer for the PANTHER 6x6 electric, with its associated high-voltage batteries provides sufficient energy for the two- to three-minute drive to the operation site, the discharge of the entire extinguishing agent, and the return trip by the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Initial tests with prototypes show that multiple operational or movement drives can be completed on a single battery charge.  ARFF vehicle The aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) vehicle combines the safety and functionality of the current generation with the advantages of electric mobility, such as a reduction in noise and emissions. In addition to meeting global standards and airport requirements such as ICAO, NFPA 414/1900, or FAA, the PANTHER 6x6 electric is designed to help the airport sector effectively reduce its carbon footprint.  Direct and alternating current An Energy Backup System is installed in the vehicle to ensure continuous use The PANTHER 6x6 electric can be charged with both direct and alternating current and has a maximum charging capacity of 300 kW. This means the vehicle is ready for the next electric operation in less than 20 minutes. The significant reduction in CO2 emissions during daily operations—from deployment to training and standby—also supports the aviation industry and airport operators in achieving their climate protection goals. PANTHER generation During the conception of the PANTHER 6x6 electric, Rosenbauer involved airport operators and fire departments from the very beginning. The aim was to handle daily operations entirely on electric power and to meet the required acceleration (0 to 50 mph in under 25 seconds) and top speed (75 mph) purely on electric drive. The water pump can also be operated electrically at full capacity (2,378 gal/min). Thus, the experience of users was directly incorporated into the vehicle's development. The PANTHER 6x6 electric combines the current PANTHER generation with the advantages of electromobility, such as the minimizing noise and pollutant emissions. "Rosenbauer is firmly convinced that the PANTHER 6x6 electric can handle over 90% of its daily tasks purely electric. It was developed as a high-performance ARFF truck that not only provides emergency crews with a more environmentally friendly, but also a more efficient working environment," says Philipp Platzl, Product Manager for Airport Fire Trucks. Firefighting system performance The high-performance pump in the auto can be run either electrically or in a mix with Energy Backup System The four electric drive motors in the PANTHER 6x6 electric provide outstanding driving performance to reach the operation site quickly. The firefighting system performance (pump, foam proportioning, turret) is the same as that of the conventionally powered PANTHER. The PANTHER 6x6 electric also features a sharper design. A new lighting concept, from the airfield searchlights to the LED scene lights, makes the vehicle more visible and safer. Naturally, the PANTHER 6x6 electric also meets all globally required standards such as ECE norms and airport requirements like ICAO, NFPA 414/1900, or FAA. Development of RT/RTX "Through the development of our RT/RTX (electric pumper), we have acquired a great deal of expertise in the field of e-mobility, which we have been able to use in the development of the PANTHER 6x6 electric over the last two years." Back in Indianapolis for the first time since 2019, FDIC International 2021 offered a full slate of conference sessions, hands-on training and equipment exhibitions. Attendance was down, but everyone appeared happy to be back at the show, after cancellations and delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Masking compliance was low, despite continuing concerns about COVID-19 and the Delta variant. There was little social distancing. In many respects, the show seemed back to normal. A highlight of the event was the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s (NFFF) 9/11 Stair Climb. It’s a way for attendees to honor and remember those in the fire service community, who gave their lives in the 9/11 tragedy. Hundreds of FDIC participants paid tribute by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. MSA Safety displayed the new LUNAR hand-held device that helps keep firefighting teams connected, combining direction and distance information with thermal imaging to help find separated teammates and decrease response time. LUNAR uses cloud technology to increase fire-scene management capabilities for incident commanders. LUNAR can be used as a stand-alone device or as part of an MSA SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) system. Thermal imaging with edge detection identifies hot spots and ventilation points, so as to simplify navigation through low-visibility environments. Tethered drone and Reveal FirePRO X thermal camera FotoKite (Perspective Robotics AG), which has a joint development agreement with MSA Safety, featured a tethered drone that hovers over the site of an emergency, in order to provide networking capabilities through the tether for better connectivity. Seek Thermal offers the ‘smallest and lightest’ thermal imaging camera, available for US$ 799 and seeks to bring the benefits of thermal technology to every position on the fire team. The Reveal FirePRO X can now be charged using a four-station charging dock priced at US$ 399. The compact size makes the FirePRO X easy to carry and manage, while its high resolution and fast frame rate ensure superior images. Teledyne gas detection systems exhibited Teledyne displayed a range of gas detection systems, starting with the simple Protégé ZM carbon monoxide meter that can clip onto pockets, helmets, and EMS bags. A new product is the Gas Laser, a hand-held device that can quickly scan common venting points from a safe distance, in order to identify the presence of dangerous explosive gas. Teledyne recently acquired FLIR and the combined companies will provide a spectrum of imaging technologies and products spanning X-ray through infrared and from components to complete imaging systems. One featured company was Tracks North America, which provides unmanned vehicles with fork-lift capabilities. Another was Infysort, which makes superabsorbent pellets – ‘hyper-blown polypropylene sorbent nanomaterial’ that can absorb 50 to 60 times its weight in oil. Hale Products SAM control system HURST Jaws of Life demonstrated eDRAULIC 3.0, a new underwater power extrication tool The SAM control system, by Hale Products, is gaining in popularity, offering computerized/integrated water flow controls that manage a fire truck’s pump, tank, intakes and discharges using touch-screen display for simplified interface. The new SAM Smart Nozzle allows firemen to control flow from the end of the fire hose. HURST Jaws of Life demonstrated eDRAULIC 3.0, a new underwater power extrication tool that can withstand salt water. The Lifeline Firehose provides a source of continuous breathable air coming from the nozzle of a fire hose. The patented coupler design enables the continuous air supply, which can also be used to power air tools. Seeking to help small and medium fire departments replace paper documentation, incident management systems offer low-cost digitization. Environmental awareness From Rosenbauer A topic among fire apparatus companies is idle reduction systems designed to shut off the main engine in a fire apparatus when not needed, eliminating loud diesel engine noise and exhaust, while maintaining power for lighting and air conditioning, for example. It is a reflection of growing environmental concerns among fire manufacturers. For example, Rosenbauer’s Green Star system makes idle reduction easy, using electronic controls to shut down the chassis engine on-scene (if the fire pump is not engaged or no aerial operations under way), and starting a diesel-driven Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). CMC Rescue Rope and Harness Systems CMC Rescue Inc. demonstrated rope and harness systems for rescue operations, including special duffle bags and access packs for easy transport of harnesses. The CMC Clutch is now available in 13 mm and 11 mm models, for hauling, lowering, ascending, descending, belaying and deploying twin-tension rope systems. The CMC Triskelion 10-foot tripod features rapid deployment, for example, over a hole where a rescue is taking place and is certified to NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standards.

North America’s largest fire event, FDIC International, brings together more than 34,000 fire industry professionals this month (April 8-13) at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. First constructed in 1928, FDIC continues today in its original tradition of providing a forum for networking about the most vexing issues and sharing the most promising solutions to concerns that face the fire service. FDIC provides opportunities to learn new techniques, train alongside world-class leaders, and advance discussions among the most influential firefighters in the industry.
