Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company, announced that authorized dealer MacQueen Emergency has secured a four-year contract with the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) for the purchase of Pierce fire apparatus. This marks the second consecutive multi-year agreement between the parties since their successful contract was established in 2015. "Ultimately, the quality of Pierce apparatus and their ability to tailor-make apparatus to suit Indianapolis’ urban environment and call volume, led to MacQueen Emergency and Pierce Manufacturing being awarded the bid.” Pierce Enforcer™ custom chassis Additionally, Indianapolis has some older firehouses which limit the size of the apparatus The first order in the contract is comprised of 20 Pierce apparatus, including one Ascendant® 107’ Heavy-Duty Tiller, two 105’ Heavy-Duty Steel Aerial Ladders, three 100’ Heavy-Duty Rear-Mount Platforms, two 100’ Heavy-Duty Aerial Towers with mid-mount configuration, and 12 top control custom pumpers. All new fire apparatus will be built on the Pierce Enforcer™ custom chassis. The new fire trucks will be designed to address the unique requirements of the Indianapolis Fire Department, offering features that accommodate Indianapolis’ varying terrain and temperate climate with fluctuations from high-heat summers to snowy winters, which lead to road wear and hazardous conditions. Additionally, Indianapolis has some older firehouses which limit the size of the apparatus. Essential features of fire apparatus Some of the essential features of the department’s new fire apparatus include shorter overall length and height, heavy-duty frame rails and TAK-4 Independent Suspension system for rough road conditions, PACCAR MX-13 engines to meet the demand of a heavy run load, and superior climate control for extreme weather conditions. The new fleet will be a front-line apparatus serving diverse Indianapolis neighborhoods Deputy Chief of IFD’s Logistics Division, Kevan Crawley, added, “This order is an important step towards uniformity, which not only presents a visually consistent fleet but also enables us to standardize our operations and reduce our fleet expenditures. The new fleet will be a front-line apparatus serving diverse Indianapolis neighborhoods. The four-year contract was made possible with the assistance of the Indiana Bond Bank, which facilitated the financing. The Indianapolis Fire Department also utilized an upfront payment option from Pierce, resulting in significant taxpayer savings.

The apparatus is the first of its kind and addresses the City of Rochester’s requirements to reduce emissions and its carbon footprint. The Pierce idle reduction technology incorporates high-performance lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries, and auto-start with Command Zone™, with 60 minutes of run-time. Idle reduction technology “The City of Rochester is committed to creating a sustainable and resilient future for our community,” said Rochester Fire Chief, Eric Kerska. “Selecting a fire apparatus with idle reduction technology supports our initiatives to reduce emissions and fuel usage. The department’s new custom fire apparatus will serve a dual purpose to support both fire and emergency medical service calls – with the average call lasting approximately 20 minutes. Critical on-Scene loads During service calls, the new apparatus featuring Pierce idle reduction technology will allow the main chassis diesel engine to shut down while battery-powering NFPA 1901 required devices, user-defined mission critical on-scene loads, and warning and scene lighting. “Our team welcomed the environmental forward-thinking of the City of Rochester and Rochester Fire Department as we collaboratively explored options for fire truck idle reduction technology,” said Tom Soland, unit sales representative with MacQueen Emergency Group. “It was critical that the idle reduction technology not affect on-scene operations or take up a lot of space on the fire truck, and Pierce’s new technology met all those apparatus requirements.” Reduced green-House gases Rochester Fire Department’s new apparatus with idle reduction technology includes built-in safety interlocks, as Pierce’s Command Zone monitors battery voltage and temperature inside the fire truck’s cab–allowing users to control when and how long to utilize idle reduction. Recharging of the idle reduction components is conducted from a fire station power drop and complete in less than three hours when the batteries are fully depleted. Based on Rochester Fire Department’s average call times, a typical battery recharge is complete in less than 45 minutes. The acquisition is comprised of territories and all facilities, including dealership and service locations. MacQueen Emergency, a customer-focused provider of the highest-quality emergency products, will begin offering expanded services to Illinois and Indiana, while continuing to service its existing regions of Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
