Fire Protection Publications’ Barbara Adams Honored With IFSTA's 2019 IFSJLM Legacy Award

The Annual Research Symposium that supports the International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management (IFSJLM) was held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on July 13, 2019, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. At the research symposia, national and international scholars present papers on topics related to fire leadership and management. IFSJLM is sponsored and published by Fire Protection Publications (FPP) and the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) located on the campus of Oklahoma State University (OSU). IFSJLM’s Annual Research Symposium 2019 At the 2019 symposium, retired FPP Senior Editor Barbara Adams was presented with the IFSJLM Legacy Award. This award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the development and production of the journal. Barbara served as the copy editor for the journal from the time of its inception. Although she retired from FPP in 2015, she continued to serve as the journal copy editor through the 2018 edition. Her influence on the content and design of the journal played a significant role in the outstanding publication that is become over the years. Founding Journal Editor Dr. Bob England noted that “Barbara is very deserving of the IFSJLM Legacy Award. For the past ten years she served as the copy editor of the International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management. In addition to her copy editing, we also asked Barb to become THE expert on the American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style used in the Journal – clearly a job by itself. Barbara always handled all tasks and duties with grace, expertise, and patience. She is a great teacher and role-model to all who know her.” IFSJLM Legacy Award Congratulations to Barbara Adams for being selected the IFSJLM Legacy Award recipient for Research Symposium 2019. IFSI's Dr. Gavin Horn Honored With The 2019 Dr. John Granito Award At IFSTA’s Annual Research Symposium 2019

The Annual Research Symposium that supports the International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management (IFSJLM) was held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on July 13, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. At the research symposia, national and international scholars present papers on topics related to fire leadership and management. IFSJLM is sponsored and published by Fire Protection Publications (FPP) and the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) located on the campus of Oklahoma State University (OSU). 2019 Research Symposium (RS 16) At the 2019 Research Symposium, Dr. Gavin Horn received the Dr. John Granito Award for Excellence in Fire Leadership and Management Research that is presented each year at the symposium in recognition of outstanding achievement in fire-related research. This award is named in honor of Dr. John Granito, one of the premier fire and public safety consultants in the United States. Dr. Granito served in a number of academic positions for almost 30 years. He is Professor Emeritus and Retired Vice President for Public Service and External Affairs at State University of New York-Binghamton. Firefighter health and safety expert Dr. Horn has served as the Director of Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) Research since August 2004, immediately after receiving his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interests focus on firefighter health and safety, First Responder technology development, material testing and design, and non-destructive evaluation. His research on firefighter wellness has enhanced the health and safety of American firefighters" In recent years, Dr. Horn has been one of the leaders in examining fire service occupational cancer issues. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and given numerous presentations at meetings, conferences and symposia around the world. Commenting on this award, Dr. Robert England, IFSJLM Founding Editor said, “Dr. Gavin Horn is a well-known and respected scholar. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles in very prestigious academic journals and has received about 15 million dollars in grants to support his research. During the past two decades, his research focusing on structural firefighting and firefighter wellness issues and concerns has enhanced the health and safety of American firefighters and EMS personnel.” Dr. John Granito Award recipient Dr. England adds, “Congratulations to Dr. Gavin Horn for being selected the Dr. John Granito Award recipient for Research Symposium 2019. We applaud his dedication to and passion for enhancing the quality of life and well-being of the women and men in the fire service through his scientific research.”

Fire Protection Publications’ Ann Moffat Felicitated At IFSTA’s 86th Annual Validation Conference

During the General Session of the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) 86th Annual Validation Conference held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the 2019 Marvin Austin Distinguished Leadership Award was presented to Ann Moffat, Graphics Unit Manager (retired), Fire Protection Publications (FPP). IFSTA 86th Annual Validation Conference The Marvin Austin Distinguished Leadership Award is presented by the staff of Fire Protection Publications in recognition of outstanding leadership efforts in the IFSTA Validation Conference. The award is not presented every year, but only when the staff believes that there is someone worthy of this recognition. Moffat was hired as the first fulltime artist at FPP on July 1, 1972. She holds a degree in Graphic Art from Oklahoma State University. She played an integral role in IFSTA/FPP’s evolution from hand-drawn charcoal art and linotype document construction to current electronic graphics and manual design. IFSTA/FPP fire safety training manuals Ann’s fingerprints are on virtually every piece of printed material developed by IFSTA/FPP During her record 45 years at FPP, Ann was responsible for the final development of hundreds of manuals, curriculum products, advertising materials, and the signs and graphics needed to host the IFSTA Validation Conference and January Meetings. Ann’s fingerprints are on virtually every piece of printed material developed by IFSTA/FPP. She was also responsible for working directly with the various firms and agencies that performed the printing of the materials. In her retirement, Ann’s legacy at FPP continues as her daughter, Heather Blankenship, remains on staff where she has been part of the Customer Service Unit for more than 18 years. FPP Director Craig Hannan said, “The quality of all the IFSTA and FPP materials developed in the last 45 years are a tribute to Ann’s talent and dedication to the organization. No one person had a greater impact on the organization’s image and impact than did Ann.” Advancing firefighting and emergency response techniques IFSTA was established in 1934 with the mission to develop and validate training materials for the fire service and other emergency responders. IFSTA is an association that attracts the world’s renowned experts who are dedicated to advancing firefighting and emergency response techniques and firefighter safety through validated training materials. Fire Protection Publications at Oklahoma State University, is the IFSTA headquarters, publishing and distributing the validated training texts and other materials that support firefighter and emergency responder teaching and learning.
