LFB Deputy commissioner Steve Smith receives certificate from Justice Minister Rt Hon Crispin Blunt

London Fire Brigade has become the first fire and rescue service to employ someone through a national programme designed to rehabilitate young offenders.

The Young Offender Programme led by National Grid helps prisoners get back into work on their release and aims to reduce re-offending rates. Figures show that less than 6% of people on the scheme re-offend compared to the national average re-offending rate of 70%.

This week both the Brigade, and the member of staff it has employed, were presented with certificates by Justice Minister the Rt Hon Crispin Blunt to mark their participation in the scheme.

The successful candidate was interviewed for the non-uniformed role as he was nearing the end of his sentence and started his employment prior to his release from prison in April this year.

London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said: "It's recognised that a structured lifestyle is one of the key factors in reducing re-offending. London Fire Brigade is committed to equality of opportunity for all job applicants and I'm immensely proud that we are taking a lead role in embracing this scheme which reflects our dedication to the rehabilitation of offenders."

"The member of staff we have employed is currently making great progress in his new role and his efforts are to be commended."
