An apprentice from Wessex Fire & Security picked up a gong at the annual Security Excellence Awards – the industry “Oscars”.
Matt Gautrey together with Luke Preston, who both attend Yeovil College, were shortlisted in the “Engineers of Tomorrow” category.
The pair competed in a skills challenge at the International Fire & Security Exhibition & Conference in May and were subsequently invited to the glitzy awards ceremony held at the prestigious Park Lane Hilton Hotel in London.
Nearly 1,000 guests attended the black tie function, which was hosted by actor and comedian Rufus Hound.
The evening highlights the very best people, projects and processes that the UK’s security industry has to offer.
Wessex Fire & Security based in Shaftesbury, Dorset, is part of the Wessex Group and is a growing company that believes in apprenticeships and training its own workforce.
Matt, 19, and Luke, were runners-up in the category and received a £500 Red Letter Day voucher as a prize.
Wessex Group Director Simon Morgan, who attended the ceremony, said: “Matt is an absolute credit to Wessex and is an exemplary apprentice.
“We are very proud of his achievement and also congratulate Luke Preston his team mate.
“I made a dignified exit at around 12:30am, leaving Matt and his fellow apprentices at the after show party – I know he thoroughly enjoyed his well-deserved evening and stay in London.”
The Wessex Group is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary and each month is giving “50 something” to charity.
