Rail transportation stands for sustainable mobility. To make rolling stock even safer, fast and reliable fire detection systems are essential to protect people and minimize damage. This is why automatic detection systems are used, with aspirating smoke detectors enabling early fire detection.

These systems were first used 30 years ago. WAGNER is presenting the latest developments in this technology as well as other fire protection systems and innovations at InnoTrans 2024 in Berlin from September 24 to 27 in hall 2.2, stand 250 of Swissrail.

Aspirating smoke detectors

TITANUS® aspirating smoke detectors from WAGNER are used worldwide for early fire detection in passenger compartments, control cabinets, air conditioning systems, and machine rooms. They continuously take air samples via a pipe system, detect the finest smoke particles as early as the pyrolysis phase and thus ensure the earliest possible fire detection.

The space-saving and unobtrusive systems integrate seamlessly into the design of both new and historic trains. As the functional components are concealed behind panels and only small sampling points remain visible, the systems are protected against vandalism.

TITANUS® systems

TITANUS® plans are a state-of-the-art fire protection solution that is suitable for rolling stock types

Thanks to intelligent algorithms, they offer a high level of immunity to false alarms and operate very effectively despite the airflow from air conditioning systems. The TITANUS® systems are a state-of-the-art fire protection solution that is suitable for use in a wide variety of rolling stock types.

Aspirating smoke detection systems for rolling stock have been on the market for 30 years – and are still in operation. WAGNER is continuously developing the technology. A new additional feature is the contamination indicator. This enables predictive and resource-efficient maintenance. For technical areas where smoke detection is unsuitable, WAGNER also offers heat detectors that can be used as stand-alone solutions or integrated into existing fire detection systems.

Central, smart, and clear: fire alarm control panels

Fire alarm control panels (FACP) from WAGNER record fire alarms in the train and control various functions such as raising the alarm, triggering extinguishers or switching off the air conditioning system. All fire detectors and components are connected to the FACP via a ring line, which guarantees permanent functionality. The control panels have an Ethernet connection for integration into the train bus interfaces.

The new Rail 148, further development of the proven WAGNER Rail 138 fire alarm control panel, is technically up to date and optimally equipped for future generations of detectors and couplers. It has additional maintenance and diagnostic options such as an extended data memory with status reports.

automatic fire extinguishing

Water mist systems are used for automatic fire extinguishing in passenger enclosures

Based on national and international standards and operator requirements, automatic extinguishing systems are increasingly being installed for effective fire extinguishing in addition to fire detection. Water mist systems are used for automatic fire extinguishing in passenger compartments, sleeping wagons and staff areas. These limit the development of fire and smoke so that people can be evacuated safely. WAGNER uses a specially developed low-pressure technology that atomizes water into very fine droplets and thus achieves maximum cooling – and therefore fire extinguishing – with minimum water consumption.

For enclosed areas such as control and switch cabinets as well as electrical systems, WAGNER offers gas extinguishing technology that works with natural extinguishing gas nitrogen. The gases displace the oxygen and suffocate the fire. In combination with rapid fire detection, this technology enables safe and residue-free extinguishing without jeopardizing the electrical systems.

Gas extinguishing systems

A globally unique new development from WAGNER Rail now makes it possible to extinguish fires in open, highly ventilated technical rooms even while the train is moving at high speed: with an aerosol extinguishing system.

Openings of the guarded areas are large for loyal extinguishing by extinguishing gas

Thanks to this technology, trains do not have to slow down or interrupt their journey to extinguish fires in areas with transformers, power converters, or diesel engines. The aerosol systems are therefore an important milestone for rail safety. Where the placement of gas extinguishing systems with containers is too complex or the openings of the protected areas are too large for reliable extinguishing by extinguishing gas, these systems are ideal.

WAGNER Rail 2024

Dr. Markus Müller, Managing Director of WAGNER Rail GmbH reports: “WAGNER's aspirating smoke detection systems marked our entry into the rolling stock market segment. Today, we are the market pioneer in aspirating smoke detectors with over 30,000 installations worldwide and have a broad portfolio for fire protection in rolling stock. Our “Made in Germany” solutions are in use all over the world: in streetcars, metros, light rail and elevated trains, high-speed trains, passenger coaches, people movers and many more."

"Even tourist attractions on rails are protected with WAGNER solutions – from the mountains to the desert. We look forward to making sustainable mobility even safer with our fire protection systems. Sustainability is important to us and we promote it. In the EcoVadis sustainability ranking, WAGNER Rail 2024 was awarded the bronze award.”
