WAGNER Rail GmbH, based in Haar near Munich, has installed a fire protection solution in a people mover in Russia for the first time: at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport.

Ensuring passenger safety

Since May 2018, the so-called Cable Liner has been running fully automatically on a route of around two kilometers, connecting the northern and southern terminal complexes.

It is the first Cable Liner to run underground in a tunnel. To make the journey as safe as possible for passengers, the producer, Doppelmayr Cable Car GmbH, together with its supplier Carvatech Karosserie und Kabinenbau GmbH, turned directly to the fire protection experts at WAGNER Rail GmbH.

fire protection solution

A standstill of the cable liners as a result of a fire would have significant consequences for the passengers

To ensure that up to 3,360 passengers per hour can travel safely between the terminals 365 days a year, WAGNER Rail GmbH has installed a fire protection solution in the two four-part cable liners, which includes various technologies: multi-sensor fire detectors, linear heat detectors, and aerosol extinguishing systems, all of which are connected to a fire alarm control center.

In addition to protecting the passengers, the customer also gave the safety of the installed technical containers a high priority.

The fire risk within the automatic people movers primarily comes from the electrical systems installed in them. And: A standstill of the cable liners as a result of a fire would have significant consequences for the passengers and especially for air traffic.

multi-sensor fire detectors

In the four-passenger areas on each Cable Liner, WAGNER Rail GmbH uses multi-sensor fire detectors. Multi-sensor fire detectors work on the principle of light scattering.

The core is a high-quality optoelectronic measuring chamber that optimally detects light and dark smoke particles. The detectors enable a fire to be reliably detected and passengers to be evacuated as quickly as possible. This is particularly important because the Cable Liner operates in a tunnel system.

multi-sensor fire detectors

The technical areas are protected against fire separately: There are three technical containers in each carriage. These contain distributors and control devices.

These technical containers are all equipped with multi-sensor fire detectors and also with linear heat detectors.

heat sensor

An aerosol extinguishing system was also integrated into the fire protection solution

The heat sensor monitors the temperature. In the event of a fire, it reacts if the alarm temperature is exceeded by a short circuit in the sensor line. The parameter detected in each case leads to an alarm message.

To effectively extinguish possible fires in the technical areas at an early stage in an emergency, an aerosol extinguishing system was also integrated into the fire protection solution. This is used in all technical areas of all carriages.

rail fire protection project

For the rail fire protection experts from Bavaria, it was the first cable liner project. In Russia itself, WAGNER Rail GmbH has already completed several projects.

For example, anyone who wants to travel from Sheremetyevo Airport to Moscow city center has to board the Aeropress Moscow. This is also safely protected against fire - with innovative technology from the fire protection expert.
