Valley Inn Volunteer Fire Department (VIVFD) has taken delivery of their Toyne Tailored Pumper after a long journey from the Toyne headquarters in Iowa to its new home in Monongahela, Pennsylvania.

The apparatus is equipped with the latest equipment and technology, ready to take the call.

Response readiness

For over 50 years, the VIVFD has protected the townships of Carroll, Nottingham, and Sommerset, along with providing mutual aid to surrounding communities in Washington County, Pennsylvania. The department has 30 dedicated firefighters and a station of apparatus at the ready to protect lives and property.

Over the last few years, the VIVFD has been responding to an increasing number of calls. In 2019, the Valley Inn firefighters responded to 369 calls, their highest annual volume recorded. The department’s Toyne Pumper will bolster their response readiness.

Pumper features

Toyne built the pumper body using bolted painted stainless steel. This construction features an array of multi-functional storage compartments on either side of the apparatus. The stowage utilizes Toyne Tailored slide-out shelving and tools boards, which allows the department to have a more flexible equipment payload and easier access.

Storage just above the wheel wells is designed to hold eight SCBA bottles, and the wheel well opposite of the fuel filler inlet has a slide-out floor dry compartment. Dedicated holds in the back of the apparatus were built for slide-in hard suction, ladder, and pike pole storage. Protecting each compartment and pump panels are ROM-painted roll-up doors.

Custom compartments

Valley Inn’s apparatus design has two 1.75-inch cross lays; multiple pump discharge and intake mounts.

This custom pumper body is mounted on a Spartan Metro Star LFD chassis. The department’s cab features a 10-inch raised roof and has seating for six firefighters, with two more jump seats at the ready. Additional storage compartments can be found throughout the front cabin. Powering Valley Inn’s apparatus is a 450-horsepower Cummins ISL 9 engine and Allison 3000 EVS transmission.

For fire suppression, their Toyne is equipped with a 1,000-gallon UPF tank, and a 1,500 GPM enclosed side-mount Waterous CSU pump. Tank levels are monitored by an ICI SL Plus tank gauge. The CSU pump is regulated by a Fire Research Pump Boss pressure governor. Valley Inn’s apparatus design has two 1.75-inch cross lays; multiple pump discharge and intake mounts.

Additional features

The department’s pumper lighting setup includes Whelen warning lights, PFH2 brow light, PCH2 cab scene lights, and Command Light SL442D-W2 LED light tower. For additional electrical usage, Toyne equipped the apparatus with a Harrison 6,000-watt hydraulic generator and an in-compartment electrical cord reel.

This apparatus is not only designed for power and performance, but it is also made to be a flexible platform for the VIVFD’s needs,” said Bill Bird, Toyne Product Support Coordinator. “Their new Toyne pumper is ready to reliably respond for years to come.”

The pumper was sold to VIVFD by Tri-State Fire, which serves southwest Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia.
