Firefighters remain at the scene of a major fire that broke out at the Station Hotel in Ayr on Monday evening. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) was called to a fire at the Station Hotel at 5.37 pm on Monday, 25 September, 2023.

At its height, SFRS mobilized fifteen appliances to the scene, where crews were met with a well-developed fire in a large derelict building. One fire appliance remains at the scene on Wednesday, 27 September, 2023.

Trained Operations Control staff

Area Commander - Ian McMeekin is the Local Senior Officer for East, North, and South Ayrshire. He said: "Firefighters are currently dampening down at the scene as they work to extinguish small pockets of fireThis is being made challenging due to the internal condition of the building, which is restricting access."

LSO McMeekin added: “As a national service, our highly trained Operations Control staff have the flexibility to mobilize the most appropriate fire appliance to any incident. A number of high-reach appliances have been mobilized to this incident, including the one based in Kilmarnock, which developed a technical fault and was replaced. High reach vehicles are national assets which can be strategically deployed to incidents across the country."

Outcome of the incident

Ian McMeeki concludes: "As this was a derelict building with no life risk, and given the developed fire, the deployment of the high reach appliance was not time critical and did not impact the outcome of the incident."

As part of the ongoing response to this incident, they will continue to monitor the weather warnings in place across Scotland. Crews are likely to remain on the scene throughout today and tomorrow.
