Between July 2018 and June 2021, UKAS’ measurement uncertainty technical focus, Dr. John Greenwood has worked with a consortium of other experts from several European National Metrology Institutes, designated institutes, an industrial company (Rolls-Royce), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), an Asian NMI (AIST) and another accreditation body (Accredia), in order to produce a compendium of worked uncertainty examples.

This project, 17NRM05 “Examples of Measurement Uncertainty Evaluation”, received funding from the EMPIR program co-financed by the Participating States and from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.

UKAS played a key role throughout the project, leading one of the three work packages, creating examples, and contributing to several other examples.

It contains tutorial information and reference material on several subjects:

  • Using the Monte Carlo method
  • Bayesian inference in R and RStan
  • Understanding and treating correlated quantities in measurement uncertainty evaluation
  • Reporting measurement results

It also includes 42 examples across a wide range of fields:

  • Calibration, measurement, and testing
  • Conformity assessment
  • Environment
  • Energy
  • Quality of life
  • Industry and society

The examples vary in complexity. They are predominantly ‘real’ examples; however, most are intentionally written in a form that allows them to be easily adapted to other applications.

Chair of JCGM WG1

The chief stakeholder for the project, the Chair of JCGM WG1 (responsible for the GUM suite of documents) has welcomed the compendium and expects to adopt many of the examples into a forthcoming document ‘JCGM GUM-5’.

Other examples have already been adopted by standards committees and creators of guidance documents and training material.
