Howard County Fire Protection District welcomed a Toyne Pumper Tanker to its fleet this spring, marking the district’s fourth new Toyne apparatus in the last few years. The pumper tanker will increase the firefighting strength of the department, which covers a wide territory in north-central Missouri.

Premier Fire Apparatus

Built by Toyne, a fire apparatus manufacturer located in Breda, Iowa, Howard County’s pumper tanker was mounted on a Freightliner M2 106 chassis with a two-door cab. Driven by an Allison 3000 EVS transmission and bolstered by the power of a Cummins ISL 9 350 horsepower engine, the apparatus is designed to be a versatile firefighting force.

Their latest Toyne Pumper Tanker includes a Darley LSP Power Take-Off Pump, which is able to fight flames with an output of 750 gallons per minute. The pump is supplied by a 2,000-gallon UPF tank and controlled by a Fire Research PumpBoss pressure governor.

Tailored to meet the needs

The Howard County Fire Protection District covers Howard County, Missouri, with three stations in Fayette, New Franklin, and a rural area on the east side of the county. This is the department’s fourth Toyne apparatus in the last several years, after receiving a pumper and two other pumper tankers in 2016.

We were really impressed with the quality of the trucks when we did our first factory tour… we thought they were very well built trucks,” said David Kunze, a Howard County Fire Protection District firefighter. “We’ve had excellent service with the three that we’ve already got, so we decided to go back to Toyne for a fourth one. They tailor them to meet what we need, and not just what they want to sell us.”

It means a lot to us to have the Howard County Fire District return to Toyne for another apparatus,” said Michael Schwabe, president and CEO of Toyne, Inc. “We are proud to work with them to fill their fleet with tailored apparatus that can tackle any call that comes their way.” This Pumper Tanker was sold by Tri-Lakes Fire Apparatus, a Toyne dealer based out of Warsaw, Missouri.
