College Fire Prevention Act passed by the House of Representatives
Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (D-OH) introduced the College Fire Prevention Act

On May 19, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2136, the Stephanie Tubbs Jones College Fire Prevention Act, by a voice vote. The bill, which is supported by the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), was introduced on April 28, 2009, by Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (D-OH).

H.R. 2136 is named for Stephanie Tubbs Jones, a Congresswoman from Cleveland, OH, and the original sponsor of the College Fire Prevention Act, who passed away on August 20, 2008. The bill directs the Secretary of Education to make competitive demonstration grants to institutions of higher education, fraternities, and sororities for up to half the cost of installing fire sprinkler systems or other fire suppression technologies in student housing and dormitories.

The NVFC has advocated for passage of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones College Fire Prevention Act on Capitol Hill, including earlier this year during Campus Fire Safety Hill Day. H.R. 2136 now moves to the Senate where it was referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions on May 20.
