Fire safety capabilities at Canary Wharf Elizabeth line station will soon be upgraded as a contract awarded by Transport for London (TfL) to critical national infrastructure specialists - Telent enters its fifth month.

Telent, working for Rail for London Infrastructure (RfLI), is upgrading the existing fire detection and alarm system, removing redundant elements, and simplifying the previous configuration to enhance user-friendliness. The project will also simplify the task of upgrading assets for future improvements.

fire safety maintenance

"This is a really exciting opportunity for Telent to demonstrate to TfL, our capability in fire safety maintenance, apply our expertise and experience of working on the Elizabeth line, and grow our extensive relationship with TfL even further," said Telent’s Director of Asset Management, Reg Cook.

He adds, "We’re proud to have made good progress on the project so far and look forward to developing our fire business further with TfL."

verify and decommission

The station is one of the largest and most popular on the line, connecting Canary Wharf with the National Rail network

Telent’s work includes verifying and decommissioning the third-party interfaces that are no longer required working collaboratively across multiple disciplines with TfL to make it easier for maintenance engineers to operate and maintain the system at Canary Wharf.

The station, which opened in 2022, is one of the largest and most popular on the line, connecting Canary Wharf with the National Rail network.

remote monitoring

Telent’s previous work in the fire industry involved designing and implementing a solution to remotely monitor and manage station fire isolations.

The Remote Fire Isolation Project (RFIP) makes it easier for engineering work to be carried out safely without dust or smoke arising from work triggering evacuation alarms.

security and access assets

Telent’s other contracts with TfL involve the management of more than 250,000 security and access assets across TfL’s estate including 270 underground stations and depots and more than 80 bus stations and stands.

The assets include 16,000 CCTV cameras, more than 30,000 public address speakers, and more than 3,000 customer interfaces including help points, information displays, and clocks.

CCTV system

Telent has also worked extensively on the Elizabeth line, having been awarded a contract extension to maintain CCTV across the entirety of the network in 2020. The work supports the Driver Only Operation (DOO) CCTV system, transmitting images from platform cameras to in-cab monitors to ensure the safe departure of the train from stations.

TfL is one of Telent’s longest-standing customers, having worked together since 1996. Further projects include the Traffic Technology Contract, and supporting the King’s Coronation with traffic signals work.
