The Storm Lake Fire Department in Storm Lake, Iowa has expanded its fleet’s ability to respond to the variety of incoming calls it receives, after purchasing two custom-built Toyne apparatus. The department received delivery of a pumper tanker and a rapid attack in mid-November of 2018. These new trucks were a welcome sight to the ever-alert Storm Lake Fire Department, which responded to over 170 calls in 2017.

Tanker Characteristics

Storm Lake’s new pumper tanker is mounted on a Spartan Metro Star MFD chassis with a 10” raised roof. The apparatus is propelled by a 450 horsepower Cummins ISL engine with an Allison 3000 EVS transmission. Toyne fitted the pumper tanker with a 1,500-gallon UPF tank and a Waterous PTO-driven pump capable of releasing 1,250 gallons per minute.

The department’s new Toyne Rapid Attack is a Dodge 5500 4-door, 4x4 chassis powered by a Cummins 6.7 liter in-line 6 engines. In addition, the apparatus includes a 250-gallon UPF tank and a portable Waterous PB303 pump. Other customizations include a Foam Pro 1601 Class A foam system and a front-bumper-mounted Akron 3462 Forestry Monitor.

Providing Community Assistance

Storm Lake’s Fire Department serves the City of Storm Lake and the nearby community of Lakeside. Operating out of a single station, the department has a population of over 10,000 under its watch. As a combination fire department, the team consists of two career firefighters and 31 on-call firefighters. Fire Chief Mike Jones is a veteran firefighter with 35 years of experience.

We’re proud to deliver two new apparatus to Storm Lake. This Toyne Pumper Tanker and Rapid Attack will help those in need of assistance in the community,” said Michael Schwabe, President and CEO of Toyne, Inc. “We look forward to working with the Storm Lake Fire Department as they continue to expand.”
