Victoria Mayor - Marianne Alto has released a statement in support of City of Nanaimo climate action.

The statement reads, “The City of Nanaimo has recently come under fire from interests opposed to progressive climate action policies. I’m distressed that cities making responsible decisions in favor of their residents are being harassed for such thoughtful decisions. British Columbians know that our province is on the front lines of climate change. As municipalities in B.C. grapple with challenging climate action decisions, it’s important they be able to do so without outside interference.

City of Victoria’s commitments to climate action

It continues, “The City of Victoria has made its own commitments to climate adaptation and action based on multiple policies and actions, such as the Climate Leadership Plan and the Electric Vehicle and Electric Mobility Strategy, among others. These directions and those determined by Nanaimo, are the ways we as municipal leaders demonstrate that we govern for the present and future of our communities.

The statement concludes, “I support the City of Nanaimo in exercising its authority and responsibility to make tough choices to create the best future for all its residents.
