The children thoroughly enjoyed their tour of fire station and seeing how the firefighters tackle fires+
The group of eleven from Silver Birch Link of the Chernobyl Childrens' Lifeline Project visited Ferndown Fire Station

A group of children from Chernobyl will now be better protected against the risks of fire in their homes, thanks to a donation from fire safety products specialist, Sprue Safety Products and Dorset Fire and Rescue Service.

The two partners teamed up to provide FireAngel ST-620 smoke alarms for the children to take home with them following their annual visit to the UK to help improve their health.

During their break in Dorset, the group of eleven 10 and 11-year olds from the Silver Birch Link of the Chernobyl Childrens' Lifeline Project visited Ferndown Fire Station, where they saw demonstrations from firefighters and learned valuable safety information.

“The visit was a great success, the children thoroughly enjoyed their tour of the fire station and seeing how the firefighters tackle fires,” said Kate Huelin of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service. “As well as having fun, the children learned important safety messages which they will take home to ensure they and their families stay fire safe. Giving them smoke alarms will help to reinforce those messages.”

The visit was part of the group’s four-week recuperative stay in the UK. The children visit during the summer months when dust in their contaminated home village of Svetlagorsk causes radiation levels to rise.

The prolonged spell of fresh air and clean food in the UK helps to reduce the radioactive levels which have built up in their bodies, providing a vital boost to their immune system which lasts for at least two years, helping them to recover from and resist serious illness.
