Remote area of project needed better communication technology
Sepura's TETRA digital system plays essential role in Gorgon natural gas project

The Gorgon Project is one of the world's largest natural gas projects and the largest single resource of natural gas in Australia's history.

ComGroup, Sepura’s Australian partner, has won the competitive tender for the delivery of a TETRA digital system to the remote Gorgon Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility in Western Australia. The Gorgon project will develop the Greater Gorgon Area gas fields with the capacity to provide 300 tera-joules of gas per day to the whole of Western Australia.

Thiess Kentz, a leading Australian services provider for the energy and petrochemical sectors, awarded ComGroup the TETRA communications part of the project. The remoteness of the project site called for the deployment of state-of-the-art secure telecommunications technology. Over 500 Sepura TETRA hand-portable and mobile radios - including vehicle, fixed and marine terminals - were selected to fulfil this unique project’s challenging and exacting communication requirements. In particular, Sepura mobile terminals were selected for their 10 Watt high output power and for their gateway functionality which will provide greater coverage in such a remote and vast area.

Doug Bowden, Business Development Manager for Sepura commented: “This contract win by ComGroup is a tremendous opportunity for Sepura. With analysts forecasting a dramatic surge in gas exports over the next six years, nearly doubling by 2014 -2015, and with about A$215bn of LNG projects in the development pipeline - including A$65bn already approved - this success provides not only a great boost and an amazing case study for TETRA technology, it also amply demonstrates the perfect suitability of Sepura’s TETRA terminals to this type of environment and the countless benefits to the utilities sector users and its operatives.”

Kevin Graham, APAC Regional Sales Director for Sepura concluded: “We are proud to be part of the iconic Gorgon Project. We believe that such a pioneering initiative is a compelling incentive for the progressive adoption and diffusion of TETRA in the utilities sector and the APAC region.” The Gorgon Project is one of the world's largest natural gas projects and the largest single resource of natural gas in Australia's history. It contains about 40 trillion cubic feet of LNG – enough to power a city of 1 million people for 800 years.
