Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting strong winds with wind gusts of 70 to 90 kilometers per hour, which may result in falling tree branches and power outages.

Preparation Guide

Here’s what users can do to prepare for strong winds and help keep the neighborhood safe:

1) Trim dead or damaged tree branches to prevent them from falling during a storm. Avoid parking vehicles under trees or hydro wires during stormy weather.

2) Secure materials at risk of becoming airborne in high winds, such as garbage cans, patio furniture, retractable canopies, ladders, hoarding, building materials, banners, and awnings.

3) Be prepared for temporary loss of power. Make sure to charge the cell phone and have flashlights, blankets, a portable radio, and spare batteries on hand.

4) Know the emergency contact numbers:

  • downed power line – call 911.
  • power outage – call BC Hydro at 1.888.POWERON / 1.888.769.3766 or view BC Hydro's information on power outages.
  • fallen branches or trees – if calling on weekends or weekdays before 8 a.m. or after 4 p.m., call 250.361.0400, or call the City’s Parks Department on weekdays at 250.361.0600.

Prepare the Emergency Kits

During wet, windier months, there is a likelihood of power outages due to fallen trees or high winds. Residents should be prepared and have their emergency kits ready.
