July 15 event intended to reduce fire-related pet deaths at home

Pet Fire Safety Day is July 15, and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has partnered with ADT Security Services and the American Kennel Club to educate pet owners about potential risks when pets are left home alone as well as provide the public with fire prevention and home safety measures to ensure the safety of everyone in the household, including pets.

With an estimated 500,000 pets affected by home fires each year, Pet Fire Safety Day is designed to educate the public on how they can prevent and prepare for emergencies and present solutions for reducing these tragic instances.

As part of these activities, the NVFC and ADT partnered with fire departments across the country to distribute pet alert window clings. Community members can put these clings in their windows to alert rescuers as to the number and types of pets in the house. Over 70 departments are serving as distribution points where community members can go to pick up a free window cling. Those without a nearby distribution point can order the clings online here.
