| Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA) National Road Safety Day will be held on 6July 2012 |
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is lending support to the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA) National Road Safety Day on 6 July 2012.
Fire crews will be engaging with members of the general public at locations across the county, including Whitby, Scarborough, Malton, Catterick, Northallerton, York and Boroughbridge to pass on some key road safety messages including - Only a Fool Breaks the 2 Second Rule. Lee Howell, CFOA President said, “I am delighted that CFOA is leading on this important road safety initiative. Despite the success over the recent years in reducing the number of RTC’s, there are still an average of 5 deaths and 65 serious injuries on the UK roads each day.”
Road Safety sits high on the agenda for all Fire and Rescue Services. Andy Trowsdale, Assistant Chief Fire Officer for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said "Day and night across North Yorkshire and the City of York local fire crews, together with our partner services deal with the traumatic aftermath of appalling road accidents, which are preventable. From 1st April 2011 to 31st March this year, NYFRS attended 486 traffic collisions on the roads of York and North Yorkshire that sadly involved 31 deaths and a total of 303 people injured. Whilst our hard work locally and with colleagues in the ’95 Alive’ road safety partnership is being successful in reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads, it is plain to see that the vast majority of these incidents are preventable and I would encourage people to take some time to come and talk to us at any of the Road Safety Day events arranged across North Yorkshire on 6th July".
“With police, fire service and county council road safety officers working together on a concentrated day like this, we can really raise the profile to each and every driver and rider to drive the roads safely: thinking about using your seatbelt, driving well and being patient, keeping to the speed limit and focussing on how you make your journey - not just the meeting or appointment at the end of it.” said Tim Madgwick, Temporary Chief Constable for North Yorkshire Police and Chair of the 95 Alive Road Safety Partnership.
Dave Etheridge, CFOA Lead for Road Safety said, “We want to encourage all Fire and Rescue Services to get involved in talking to the public on 6 July, CFOA National Road Safety Day. Too many people drive far too close to the car in front and don’t allow enough time to brake safely. A recent Brake and Direct Line survey discovered that 53% of those questioned admit to breaking the 2 second rule on motorways. Don’t forget to keep your distance and drive according to the weather conditions.”
