iPhone users can access interactive version of standard for emergency preparedness

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced today the availability of an iPhone application for the latest edition of NFPA 1600, Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs, which has been adopted by the Department of Homeland Security.

The NFPA 1600 application is available for download to an iPhone from the "App Store" or from an iTunes account.

Utilized by and developed for organizations in both the public and private sector, NFPA 1600 is one of NFPA's most widely implemented standards. It protects public safety with updated best practices by establishing a common set of criteria that sets a foundation for disaster management, emergency management, and business continuity programs, using a total program approach. Organizations and parties responsible for developing such programs benefit from information on emergency management, prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery, and business continuity.

"Disasters and emergencies know no boundaries. With the help of the latest technology, we are able to use another communication channel to put tools and resources directly into the hands of people who count on them," said Kim Fontes, division manager, Product Development and Production. "The addition of the iPhone application for NFPA 1600 will provide greater access to this important document."

Through the iPhone application, NFPA 1600 is fully searchable and is equipped with active links, as well as phone numbers for NFPA and other agencies involved with emergency management programs, risk mitigation, and response. The 2007 edition includes major revisions to the listings of resources identified in the annexes. It also includes incorporating material on prevention as a new program element, as well as the latest rules for emergency management, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
