Fire Corps urges action on wildfire risk

Throughout National Preparedness Month Fire Corps has been releasing weekly information bulletins regarding a particular preparedness topic. September is the peak of wildfire season, and, according to The Blue Ribbon Panel on Wildland/Urban Interface, it is estimated that 100,000 wildland fires destroy nearly 1 million acres every year in the United States.

As climates change and larger populations move into high risk areas, the likelihood of serious disaster is increasingly imminent.

Fire Corps and the National Fire Protection Association's Firewise Communities program partnered to develop a Firewise toolkit. Getting Started With Firewise provides information about building and maintaining communities in a way that is compatible with our natural surroundings and can be used by Fire Corps teams across the nation to help protect property and natural resources from the threat of wildland fires. The toolkit is available to all registered Fire Corps programs. To order, fill out the Fire Corps Resource Request form and return to Fire Corps at info@firecorps.org or fax to 202-887-5291.

Fire Corps has created an online National Preparedness Month Resource Center to provide your department and Fire Corps team with additional tools and resources to get your community prepared for emergencies of all kinds.
