Des Moines firefighters are working to determine the cause of a barn fire that killed multiple horses early Monday morning. The fire broke out at a property along Southeast 30th Street on the city’s east side around 6 a.m. after the property owner discovered his barn engulfed in flames, Local Five News reports.

The barn housed 15 horses, and while some managed to escape, several perished in the fire. Firefighters faced challenging conditions as bitterly cold temperatures created hazards like pooling water and icy surfaces. The barn, which was built in the early 20th century, is over 100 years old. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
