Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) have been successful in extending their Gold Status in the Healthy Working Wales Awards.

The Healthy Working Wales (HWW) Programme is delivered by Public Health Wales, on behalf of the Welsh Government, and works with employers to develop and sustain environments, policies, and cultures that promote good health and support the appropriate and timely return to work of those who are absent due to sickness or who have fallen out of employment due to periods of ill health. MAWWFRS currently holds the Gold Standard, which was due for re-certification in 2020.

Status Check

This Status Check focuses on the support given to staff with regards to Health and Wellbeing

Whilst the full award process is currently on hold, due to the redeployment of Public Health Wales staff to support the pandemic response, a bespoke Status Check has been developed to explore how companies and organizations in Wales have responded to the pandemic. This Status Check focuses on the support given to staff with regards to Health and Wellbeing during the pandemic.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service received their Status Check on Friday, 9th April 2021. The Status Check was conducted by Emma George Consulting, on behalf of Healthy Working Wales, who analyzed the evidence provided by the Fire and Rescue Service around how it has supported the wellbeing of its staff during the pandemic.

Strategic objectives

On confirming the successful outcome of the Status Check, the assessor, Emma George commented, “Thank you for your time and for participating in the very successful status check. It was both interesting and inspiring to hear about how Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has developed since its last assessment for the Corporate Health Standard Award, particularly over the last 12 months as it adapted to the challenges of the global pandemic."

"There is no doubt that wellbeing is at the core of the organization and the way that it operates. I was especially interested to hear about the strategic objectives relating to wellbeing and how that will unfold over the coming months.”

people management and development

We strive to maintain a high-performing culture and continue to provide a professional and appropriate service"

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Iwan Cray, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service commented “We want our staff to be healthy and happy at work and we want them to have the confidence and space to grow and develop."

"Our approach to achieving this identifies and maximizes the potential of our workforce through effective people management and development. We strive to maintain a high-performing culture and continue to provide a professional and appropriate service, whilst making the most effective use of public funds.

counseling service

"I am very pleased that we have extended our Gold Standard, Healthy Working Wales Award. Historically, we have provided reactive support to help our staff deal with or recover from stress, trauma, or ill health by offering a counseling service, the MIND Blue Light Programme, TRIM, and support from the Fire Fighters Charity."

"However, rather than resting on our laurels, we want to be able to better recognize the signs when someone needs support with their mental health and to prevent health issues from arising, by providing early support and intervention. We aim to do what we can to help our staff enjoy longer, healthier, and fulfilled lives.”
