Lorient is excited to introduce Steve Mackay, their new Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Manager. With his strong background in HSE management, Steve is committed to reinforcing a culture of safety and sustainability at Lorient.

Since joining Lorient in October, Steve Mackay has already made a positive impact, helping the company maintain their safety record of zero accidents.

‘STAR’ approach to safety in the workplace

Steve uses the ‘STAR’ approach to safety in the workplace, which encourages everyone to pause and conduct a quick, dynamic risk assessment before each task:

  • Stop – Don’t rush into any task. If it isn’t safe, report the issue and wait until it’s resolved.
  • Think – Plan all actions. Ensure the employee is suitably qualified for the job; if they need more training, tell them to ask for guidance.
  • Act – Do the task safely, consistently monitoring the surroundings.
  • Review – If there is room for improvement, discuss it with a team leader or supervisor.

Creating a safer workplace for everyone

Steve Mackay believes STAR can help everyone approach tasks thoughtfully, creating a safer workplace for all. When he’s not championing safety at Lorient, Steve enjoys kite surfing and being outdoors!

He describes it as “Conducting my own dynamic risk assessments outside of work, where I look to the sky and the clouds and hope that the wind gods enable me to go kite surfing – ride the waves, get some air time and embrace the beauty of Devon.

The company is excited to see Steve’s vision for health, safety, and their environmental responsibility unfolding at Lorient. Welcome, Steve!
