The London Fire Brigade has won an award for cutting CO2 emissions at Croydon Fire Station
The LFB won the Sustainable Refurbishment of the Year category
The London Fire Brigade has won an award at the prestigious CIBSE Low Carbon Performance Awards (3 February, 2010).

The Brigade was given the accolade in the sustainable refurbishment of the year category for the work carried out at Croydon Fire Station. The extensive refurbishment at the station has cut CO2 emission by more than 50%.

Chairman of London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority's Finance, Procurement and Property Committee Councillor Maurice Heaster OBE said: "The improvements this Authority is making to fire stations across London shows how serious we are about reducing London Fire Brigade's carbon footprint."

The green features at the station include the installation of a Biomass boiler. The boiler runs on wood pellets made from compressed waste sawdust from a local sawmill and provides all the energy needed for the heating and hot water. It is the first fire station in the country to be heated in this way. Photolvoltaic (PV) panels were installed at the station and a night time cooling regime was initiated to reduce summertime temperatures without the need for air conditioning and high efficiency lighting was installed. During the refurbishment the windows were replaced with double glazing and insulation in the walls and on the roof were improved.

The CIBSE Low Carbon Performance Awards recognise and reward proven achievements in delivering carbon savings in buildings. Showcasing innovative and inspirational low carbon solutions the awards highlight carbon reduction in both the design and management of buildings.
