Home repair advice from FEMA will help in battling flood and storms
Storm and flood hit residents are concentrating on the ways of repairing and rebuilding homes

Whether repairing, rebuilding, building for the first time, or making home improvements, this is an ideal time to incorporate disaster-resistant measures.

Over the next three weeks, teams of hazard mitigation specialists with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be available at six home improvement stores in Connecticut to provide information and answer residents' questions about protecting their homes from future disaster damage.

Connecticut residents who are repairing or rebuilding after this spring's storms and flooding face many choices – and opportunities – about how they put the pieces of their homes and lives back together. Whether repairing, rebuilding, building for the first time, or making home improvements, this is an ideal time to incorporate disaster-resistant measures. Many are inexpensive steps that have proven effective throughout the nation in minimizing storm and flood damage.

Officials agree that the best way to minimize damage from storms and flooding and break the costly cycle of damage-repair-damage is to use techniques that resist both flood and wind damage.

A FEMA team will be at these locations from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily:

Thursday, June 10 through Monday, June 14:

  • Lowe's
    311 Old Gate Lane
    Milford, CT 06460
  • Home Depot
    142 River Road
    Lisbon, CT 06351

June 17 through June 21:

  • Home Depot
    816 Hartford Turnpike
    Waterlford, CT 06385
  • Lowe's
    90 Berlin Road
    Croomwell, CT 06416

Techniques that help in minimizing the effects of floods and storms prove useful in home repairing and construction

June 24 through June 28:

  • Lowe's
    115 Foxon Boulevard
    New Haven, CT 06513
  • Home Depot
    600 Connecticut Avenue
    Norwalk, CT 06854

The FEMA teams will explain construction techniques and offer advice on topics such as home elevation, wind straps, flood insurance, and other steps to make homes stronger and safer. Publications on these topics will also be available.

In addition, information is available online about ways to minimize damage from storms, tornadoes and flooding at the following link. The following Web site can tell the flood risk at a specific location, and provide flood maps and the names of the nearest agents offering flood insurance.

FEMA's mission is to support our citizens and first responders and to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.
