An imaginative £5 million renovation scheme that’s breathing new life into the iconic Grade II listed landmark at Saltdean, Brighton, has Kentec fire control panels at the heart of a new safety system.

Local specialists AM Fire & Security were commissioned by Brighton and Hove City Council’s Leisure Department to design and install a suitable fire system to cover all escape routes at the Grade II listed building.

Fire safety system solution

The fire safety system solution is designed around a single-loop Kentec Syncro AS analogue addressable fire control panel with Hochiki devices and ESP open communications protocol. A Kentec Syncro View repeater panel, installed at a second entrance, gives the building’s occupants access to the fire safety system. The system is future-proofed as the Kentec Syncro control panels are easy to expand and network, to become part of a much larger system.

Hailed as the most innovative design of its type in Britain, the lido was built between 1937-38 to designs by the architect Richard Jones. With its tea terrace, sun deck, café, perched on the flat roof and distinctive curved wings at either end, it became the only lido to be featured in the Design Museum in London.

In 2010 plans were announced to partially demolish the complex and build flats. Following a three-and-a-half year fight by a local community group, Brighton and Hove council approved proposals to grant them a 60-year lease to restore and operate the pool.

The newly restored site, with the bulk of its £5 million plus cost coming from the Heritage Lottery Fund, will, when completed, include a heated swimming pool, children's pool, a gym, cafe/restaurant, meeting room space for community groups and businesses, plus a library.
