More than 200 emergency service staff at Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) came together on Wednesday 2 February for a virtual session to learn and share emotional personal experiences around inclusivity and diversity.

Hosted via Microsoft Teams, the conference included informative and inspirational guest speakers, who each highlighted how everyone can embrace difference and drive positive change in the workplace, as well as in everyday life.

Equal and inclusive world

The virtual event, running in its third year, was described by those participating as ‘inspiring, awesome and insightful’, and was an opportunity for people to come together and discuss how people can work together to create an equal and inclusive world for all.

We were so proud to host an internal Embracing Difference Together conference for over 200 people"

Ann Millington, the Chief Executive at Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We were so proud to host an internal Embracing Difference Together conference for over 200 people at Kent Fire and Rescue Service. The conference was not only an opportunity to learn how we can keep improving our work for everyone, but also a time to reflect and remember the challenges the LGBTQIA+ community have faced. Holding the conferences are so important to us, and are just a small part of how we are ensuring our services remain accessible for all.”

Respectful and inspiring place

Ann Millington adds, “I’d like to take this time to thank all of the incredible speakers for their time, expertise and honest stories that help us change how we see this world.”

Ann Millington concludes, “It’s important that we are inclusive in everything we do both in work, and in everyday life - because everyone should be treated fairly and equally, no matter who you are. Together, everyone in the county can work to ensure Kent and Medway is a safe, respectful and inspiring place where everyone feels welcome.”
