Big Bear Elks Lodge held its annual Firefighters’ Appreciation Dinner on Wednesday, January 15, 2020.
Big Bear Fire Department and retirees were invited to join this celebration where the Elks Lodge recognized the Department’s Firefighter of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Elks Lodge representative Mike Anderson recognized both firefighters with plaques commemorating their achievements.

Engineer/Paramedic Jon Bidwell earned the Firefighter of the Year honor. Firefighter of the Year is a firefighter that exemplifies the positive characteristics of a member of the fire service with a notable record of service and achievements.
This award is presented to an individual who has given selflessly of themselves in support of the Fire Department, the fire service, and the community in general. Also recognized was Firefighter/Paramedic John Stein as Rookie of the Year. This award is presented to the Rookie who best exemplifies the positive characteristics of a new member of the fire service.

Big Bear Fire Department Fire Chief Jeff Willis stated of Engineer Bidwell, “This year’s Firefighter of the Year has demonstrated a high level of dedication to this organization going above and beyond, giving of himself to this organization and our community.” Engineer Bidwell has been with the Department for more than 10 years. This is the first time he has been recognized with this award.
Chief Willis recognized Firefighter Stein stating, “He is an asset to this agency and this Valley. We look forward to seeing what else he has to offer.” Firefighter/Paramedic Stein has been with the Department for 18 months.
