The RNLI was featured on the BBC news yesterday showing how they are preparing for the coming season. This includes an increase in the number of lifeguards on the beaches.

Very apt with the lovely sunshine they enjoyed. With the prospect of few, if any foreign holidays this year, coastal and inland waterways are likely to be busier than ever.

Water rescue equipment

The lockdown has given many organizations the chance to update their water rescue equipment and the photo shows Michael Gemmell from the Fire and rescue service with Craig Burnett from Shell at the stunning Lochore Meadows Country park in Fife.

The lockdown has given many organizations the chance to update their water rescue equipment

They are shown holding one of the rescue lines stored the new Jo Bird SOS603 cabinet. The park is a very popular destination for cycling, hiking, picnics and water sports. The advantages of a rescue line is the distance and accuracy which can be achieved compared to a conventional lifebuoy. Great to see the Fire and Rescue Service, together with the main sponsor, Shell UK working together to reduce the risk of drownings.

Water safety devices

The very clear signage explains what to do if someone gets into difficulties so not only are the rescue services contacted but a code is given so the rescue line can be deployed. The Signs, rescue lines, and cabinets were provided by Safequip who are a specialist supplier of water safety products.

When the lockdown eases there is bound to be a rush to locations such as this so let’s hope people take heed of the safety notices, so these water safety devices never have to be used.
