March Fire Station recently hosted a week-long Safety Zone for primary school students from across Fenland. The Safety Zone, organized by the Fenland Community Safety Partnership, saw more than 450 students attend during the week to help develop their understanding of being safe at home and outdoors.

Firefighters from March, along with the Service’s community champions, delivered information about fire safety in the home and staying safe around open water.

Other work stations included road and product safety awareness, delivered by Cambridgeshire County Council, anti-social behaviour delivered by Cambridgeshire Constabulary, and environmental awareness and staying safe on the internet, which was put together by Fenland District Council.

Authority comment

Sharon Dove, organizer of the Safety Zone, from Fenland District Council said “Safety Zone continues to be fantastic success with hundreds of pupils across Fenland taking part every year.

It’s essential that we equip children with the knowledge to tackle many potentially unsafe situations, and Safety Zone manages it in a fun and interactive way – helping them to protect themselves and their families too.”

It’s also an excellent opportunity to work in partnership with a number of agencies; without them Safety Zone would not be possible. We are very grateful to them for supporting such an important event and making the activities so enjoyable for the children. If just some of the training stays with them it will help to save lives in the future.”

Station Commander Tony Burton, officer in charge of Children and Young People engagement at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, added: “Working with young people and providing them with key safety information at a young age is very important to us.”

Safety Zones provide an excellent opportunity to engage with young people and they are always very receptive and enjoy their time visiting fire stations.”

I fully appreciate the hard work which everyone has put in to organize the Safety Zone event.”
