As much as Hollywood makes out how dangerous working on an oil rig can be, it’s surprisingly true. Major Hollywood films, such as Deepwater Horizon, tell the events of the dangers that can happen while working on oil rigs, which are situated in the middle of the ocean.

Furthermore, without the correct training provided or the workwear, many oil rig workers’ lives can be at risk, when carrying out their tasks. In this article, Granite Workwear looks at the type of workwear that is required in the oil and gas industry, and when working on oil rigs.

Headwear

First of all, helmets are more than likely required, when working in the oil and gas industry

First of all, helmets are more than likely required, when working in the oil and gas industry. This is to ensure that workers are safe from falling debris or any type of heavy machinery, such as cranes that may not notice the workers who are working down below on the oil rig and can cause an accident.

Furthermore, due to the harmful toxins in gasses and to ensure that workers are breathing clean air, face masks may be a good option, in order to help when working in dangerous environments, such as oil rigs. Other accessories, such as a helmet liner, a head torch and scarves can help aid workers, when working in cold and dark environments.

Bodywear

The main thing to consider with bodywear, as well as legwear, is high-viz clothing item, such as a vest or a jacket for maximum visibility, among other co-workers and people operating heavy machinery on the oil rig.

Beneath a high-viz jacket, fleece or even thermal workwear can help keep warm, when working in cold environments and give workers the extra bit of added comfort that they need, in order to carry out the job efficiently.

Legwear

Similar to the case of bodywear, the main thing to consider in legwear is high-viz clothing. Whether workers choose to wear a high-viz jacket or high-viz trousers, or even both, they should consider at least one or the other, in order to ensure maximum visibility, when working on the job on oil rigs.

Thermal wear is always recommended to help keep warm, when working in cold environment

Furthermore, a solid pair of workwear trousers with many pockets, loops and zips can help workers to keep their personal belongings and torches, along with other accessories, safe and handy, especially when they need them the most on the job. Thermal wear is always recommended to help keep warm, when working in cold environments, especially on an oil rig in the middle of the ocean.

Footwear

A durable and strong pair of work boots should be worn, in order to ensure a strong grip and enhanced comfort, while working on oil rigs. Work boots that include a steel cap toe go a long way in helping to protect the feet of the workers, at all costs. Additionally, of course, a comfortable, well-made pair of socks can even go further towards protecting the workers’ feet on oil rigs.
