The kids are due back at school which means the long haul of home-schooling is over. Although many people may be still working from home which means their children will not need to unlock or lock the house by themselves, some kids will.

It might be the kids have just got their own house key or they might be used to staying at home alone after school. Either way, it is worth reminding kids about basic home security so everyone can feel and keep safe. Here are 3 tips to help kids to keep home secure!

Locking Doors

Doors should always be locked! This is super simple but something that can make homes much more secure. Most burglaries occur where an intruder comes in through an unlocked door or window.

Before leaving the house make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked. This may be often forgotten especially if a family has a dog they may let in and out the backdoor to the garden.

This is also important when inside the house. It is common for burglaries to occur when an occupant is in the home through unlocked windows and doors.

Set alarm codes together

The alarm code should not be written on or near a panel as this makes it extremely easy for an intruder to unset

When setting an alarm code, one should discuss with family a memorable password so that everyone is confident in remembering it. Set it as a shared date or sequence which is unique to a family.

The code should not be written on or near a panel as this makes it extremely easy for an intruder to unset the alarm when entering the property.

Do not leave keys hidden outside home

This seems like an obvious point; however, many people will still leave a key out for their child. Tempting as it may be to leave a key out for an often-forgetful child this is an obvious place for a burglar to look for a key and gain easy entry.

Adding to this if there is no forced entry and the intruder has entered with keys it will often void the insurance.

If one feels the need to leave a key for their child one may give it to a close neighbour or a friend!
