It’s the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week and the Victoria Fire Department is again partnering with the National Fire Protection Association to promote the public safety campaign - 'Fire won’t wait. Plan the escape™.'

The campaign runs October 9 - 15 to raise awareness on how to plan to keep users and their families safe in the event of a fire.

Tips for a safe household safe

Follow these tips to prepare the household to be safe:

  • Install smoke alarms in sleeping areas and on every level of the home.
  • Practice the home fire drill and make sure everyone has an escape plan.
  • If an alarm sounds, get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
  • Know exits out of every room and ensure doors and windows leading outside open easily.
  • If there is smoke, get low and close doors behind the user when exiting.
  • Plan an outside meeting place at a safe distance from the home.

During Fire Prevention Week, the Victoria Fire Department will be visiting local elementary schools to talk about fire safety.
