Gas grills are risky because the propane or liquid petroleum (LP) gas is highly flammable. Most injuries occur because a grill is only sometimes utilized or after replenishing and reattaching the gas container on the grill. Remember these grill safety tips for LP or gas grills:

  • Routinely clean the grill because minor fires occur when grills have caked on burnt fat.
  • Constantly maintain the grill at least 10 feet away from the home, and avoid using a grill indoors.
  • Always inspect for gas leaks.
  • Light up the gas grill when the lid is open. When the lid is closed, the gas builds up inside the grill.
  • Also, keep a fire extinguisher nearby and learn how to use it properly.

Charcoal Grill Safety Tips

A fire prevention measure to remember is that carbon monoxide (CO) is released when charcoal is burned. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas dangerous in enclosed areas. This is why users should try these charcoal grill safety tips:

  • Never burn charcoal indoors, regardless of whether there is ventilation.
  • Avoid putting away a grill indoors with coals users have just burned. This is because charcoal releases carbon dioxide until charcoal is put out.
  • Don’t use gasoline when starting a charcoal fire. Instead, utilize approved charcoal lighter fluid.
  • Close the starter fluid immediately after using it and put it away safely from the grill.
  • Make sure to use enough starter fluid; otherwise, adding more liquid to the hot coals could start a fire or explosion.
  • After grilling, dump the warm coals in a secluded area in the yard to prevent others from accidentally stepping on them.

As a fire prevention measure, never leave the grill unattended. Doing so may result in burnt food or worse. So, make sure users follow the manufacturer’s instructions that accompany the grill.
