Harris County Fire Marshal Laurie L. Christensen received the Fire Protection Person of the Year Award from the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE). The Fire Protection Person of the Year Award was created in 1973 to recognize significant achievements in the protection of humanity and the environment from the ravages of unwanted fire and an outstanding contribution to fire protection from outside the membership of SFPE which is broad in scope and has apparent lasting effects.

Specifically, the individual must have made an outstanding contribution to fire protection within recent years, the contribution must be broad in scope and of national importance, and the contribution must have lasting effects.

"I am honored and humbled to be nominated and receive this award," said Harris County Fire Marshal Laurie L. Christensen. "We have made strides in Harris County over the last few years to ensure businesses, property, and people are protected from the devastation of fire. It is truly a team effort, and we will continue to work towards providing a safer place for people to work, play, and live."

"We couldn’t think of a better person to win this award," said SFPE Houston Chapter Board Member Rob Hicks. "Fire Marshal Christensen has been integral in promoting fire and life safety in Harris County and across the nation. We appreciate the relationship between the Houston Chapter and the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office, and we will continue to foster and grow this relationship now and into the future." Fire Marshal Christensen was nominated for this award by the Houston Chapter of SFPE.

The SFPE was established in 1950 and incorporated as a not-for-profit membership organization in 1971. It is the world's pioneering professional society representing those practicing in the field of fire protection and fire safety engineering. The SFPE has over 4,700 members and 104 chapters, including 21 student chapters worldwide.
