FEMA community education specialists will take part in Lowe's Safety Saturday
Event part of National Preparedness Month

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) community education specialists will be participating in Lowe's Safety Saturday. This information-sharing, public safety, preparedness event will be held Saturday, September 26, 10am - 2pm, in Augusta, ME.

"Disasters can strike at anytime with or without warning," said FEMA Deputy Federal Preparedness Coordinator Daniel C. McElhinney. "Protect yourself and loved ones by having a plan; preparing an emergency kit for your home, car and office; and practice the plan. You need to be self-sufficient for 72 hours following a major disaster. Be a survivor, not a victim!" he said.

FEMA community education specialists will be on hand at Lowe's in Augusta, located at 53 Crossing Way, with information on how to prepare an emergency supply kit, a family emergency plan, and activity kits for kids, among other helpful preparedness materials. FEMA is partnering with the Maine Emergency Management Agency to provide information especially important to Mainers. Citizens can also get involved now by visiting www.maineprepares.com or www.ready.gov.

President Barack Obama declared September 2009 National Preparedness Month, a month dedicated to encouraging the public to learn how they can better prepare themselves and their families before the next disaster. As part of this campaign, FEMA is working closely with states across the country to ensure that all communities are taking the simple steps to prepare.

During National Preparedness Month, President Obama urges all Americans to take time to educate themselves about potential disasters and to work within their communities to coordinate emergency preparedness efforts.
