The Monument, built by Sir Christopher Wren in as a memorial to the Great Fire of 1666, will shortly be protected against any further threats of fire by EMS Group
EMS Group have been chosen to protect The Monument to the Great Fire of 1666 in London

Fire detection system from EMS will protect London's tallest monument

EMS Group has been chosen to provide a wire-less fire detection solution as part of the City of London Corporation's £4.5m refurbishment programme of The Monument, one of London's most outstanding landmarks and visitor attractions. The 18-month programme will involve the cleaning and repair of the Monument's stonework and the re-gilding of its famous golden orb as well as installing the latest fire detection technology. The restoration work has been carried out by Cathedral Works Organisation (Chichester) Ltd. The EMS system was specified by the architect and M&E consultant.

EMS Group's 5000 FirePoint system was chosen as it completely eliminates expensive fire-rated cable and the potentially damaging installation works often associated with wired systems. Sir Christopher Wren's flame-topped Monument to the Great Fire of 1666 is the tallest isolated stone column in the world with 311 spiral steps taking visitors to the top. To install fire-rated cable in this historically important building would not only have been prohibitively expensive, but also damaging to the building's interior aesthetics.

The system was installed by Chelmsford-based MPE Alarms and consists of a main fire panel, combined fire sensor/sounder units and call points. 5000 FirePoint fire sensors are based on established industry designs, have no external aerials and have built-in replaceable power packs with up to a 5-year life. The EMS solution ensures that The Monument will be protected by the very latest fire detection system without the 100,000+ visitors that climb the steps each year seeing any wiring.

Even though EMS Group's wire-free solutions are ideal for heritage applications, their radio-based systems have been successfully installed in a diverse range of applications - from new build through to areas such as airports and military bases where high levels of potential radio interference exist.

The company's range of radio-based systems include analogue fire detection, voice evacuation, intruder security and personal protection, all of which can be installed without the need for cable.
