Burglary Statistics UK

The Burglary Statistics UK feature:

  • Vehicle Offences: Duing the year September 2018-2019 the UK Police Force reported that there was a 4% increase in vehicle offences and a 12% increase in robbery recordings during the period.
  • Firearms Offences: There has been a steep increase in the amount of offences recorded that involve firearms. With the report showing that 6,144 of the offences recorded involved incidents with firearms.
  • Robberies & Burglaries: There was a sharp rise in robbery offences reported to the police in 2018-2019 of 12%. The report states that this increase was expected due to improvements in the way that these figures and statistics were tracked.

decrease in the number of burglaries

Many houses in the UK still do not have adequate intruder detection or alarms

One of the most positive figures reported in the data was a decrease in the number of burglaries that took place within this period by 4% in a year on year comparison. While it is good to see a decrease in these figures, burglaries are still taking place at an alarming rate with 380,567 reported in that period. That is an average of 1,042 per day.

Most burglaries take place between 10am and 3pm – this is because these are actually the hours when your home is most at risk from lack of monitoring. Another shocking figure discovered is that the UK Police Force report that somebody is home in around 28% of burglaries that take place – meaning that around 3 out of every 10 burglaries occur whilst someone is home, perhaps upstairs asleep.

In England, only around 14% of burglaries result in arrests, which means that 86 out of every 100 burglers do not get convicted. These figures suggest that it is extremely difficult to catch and convict intruders.

Protecting Homes

Many houses in the UK still do not have adequate intruder detection or alarms. With homes that have no security measures reportedly being five times more likely to be targeted than those with security systems in place, it is important to take steps to protect property.

  • Lock doors and windows when one leavesve home
  • Keep any keys out of view from the outside. Car keys are one of the main things stolen in burglaries.
  • Leave a radio or lights on a timer when one is out of the house for a prolonged period of time.
  • Maintain any fences around the home.
  • Secure bikes and valuable property that might be left out overnight.
  • Improve natural surveillance by trimming hedges.
  • Join a local neighborhood watch scheme.
