Open-plan spaces remain hugely popular in architecture. Giant leaps of engineering achievement have made incorporating large open spaces in modern buildings easier than ever – but the resulting complexity can make protecting them from fire challenge. Concertina fire curtains offer a unique way to compartmentalize almost any open-plan space, even when the mounting surface isn’t immediately obvious.

Normal vertical fire curtains can compartmentalize whole sections of space in straight lines. This is useful for areas such as corridors or openings – but in more complex spaces with circular stairwells or escalator columns, a standard fire curtain solution won’t be effective.

Concertina fire curtains

Concertina fire curtains can accommodate more complex designs, with custom builds that can follow contours and box sections. This greatly expands the application of fire curtains in open-plan environments.

Coopers closed concertina fire curtains can be shaped into closed cylindrical columns and closed box sections

Coopers closed concertina fire curtains can be shaped into closed cylindrical columns and closed box sections, which can be applied to atriums, stairs and escalators with a maximum drop of 8 meters. The open concertina fire curtains can be shaped to follow contours, curves and L sections – making them ideal for complex open-plan spaces that incorporate flowing lines or uncommon shapes in their designs.

Highest standards of fire safety

The concertina fire curtains are designed to be invisible until their deployment, recessed into ceilings and completely self-contained. This preserves the highest standards of fire safety without compromising the architect’s vision.

At Coopers Fire, the concertina fire curtains are always made bespoke to every project. They work closely with architects, interior designers and contractors – to create the vision as intended, with no compromise to fire safety. They’re always developing, testing and improving the fire curtains and smoke curtains – to keep us at the cutting edge of fire safety.
