Chubb will install fire detection system within a large aircraft storage hanger in BAE Systems' Preston, Lancashire

Chubb Fire & Security UK, a leading provider of electronic security and fire safety solutions for business and industry, recently won a contract to install a sophisticated fire detection system to protect valuable aircraft and equipment within a large aircraft storage hangar at BAE Systems’ Warton site in Preston, Lancashire. Chubb is part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

The general purpose hangar, which is the largest on-site, is used to store both operational aircraft and those being serviced, explains Chris Hamilton, Senior Project Engineer at BAE Systems:“We recognised that advancements in fire detection technology meant that we could have a system which provided even greater protection than the one that had been installed at the time the hangar was built.”

BAE Systems turned to Chubb to recommend a system that would enhance the protection of the hangar and its contents from the threat of fire.

“In replacing the fire detection system we were looking for a supplier that we could trust,” Chris continues. “We approached Chubb since it is a large company with a proven track record. During the tender process, Chubb offered the best solution at a competitive price and won the contract as a result.”

The installation features 13 aspirating smoke detectors and interfaces with a deluge system that triggers a foam and water sprinkler system in the event of a fire. Chubb is also contracted to maintain and service the system for the first 12 months.

Chris says he has been thoroughly impressed by the support from Chubb to date:“The engineers carrying out the installation have been very professional and very flexible, adapting to our specific demands, the requirements of the hangar and the stringent safety standards that we insist on. Chubb has worked with us to ensure safe segregation between activities, enabling the installation to proceed while allowing hangar operations to continue.”

Suzanne Donovan, Marketing Director, Chubb, says that this contract is another example of the wide range of applications that Chubb’s technology has been designed to suit:.“Chubb has the experience and expertise to specify and install fire safety systems for almost any situation, and we are pleased to have been chosen to respond to the specific needs of BAE Systems and its Warton site.”

BAE Systems is a global defence and security company with approximately 100,000 employees worldwide. The company delivers a full range of products and services for air, land and naval forces, as well as advanced electronics, security, information technology solutions and support services. Its Warton site is a major assembly and testing facility for the manufacture of military aircraft and sees the design, build and flight of new aircraft.
