Chubb part of UTC Fire & Security wins Health and Safety Award from the British Ceramic Industry.

Chubb Fire has been recognised for protecting employees in potentially hazardous working environments, by scooping the Health and Safety Award for Contractors from the British Ceramic Industry. Chubb is a business of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

Portmeirion Group, whose brands including Spode and Royal Worcester, nominated Chubb Fire based on its experience on two major refurbishment projects one for its showroom, and the other for its finance and administration office.

Chubb engineers were contracted to carry out the upgrades to meet present day legislation. Their work started with a site survey as Gordon Lomax, Health and Safety Manager, explains: “Chubb’s surveyors and engineers worked with extreme caution and made safe working a priority,” he says. “Much of the project entailed working at height, the short term use of ladders, and working in difficult roof voids. Despite the potential risk, all of their work has been carried out without incident or accident.”

Chubb has worked with Portmeirion Group for 12 years, servicing the existing fire and security systems: “The engineers always show high regard for working safely in all aspects, from installations, servicing and repair and breakdown work,” Gordon adds. “In all that time there have never been any reported near misses or accidents which is testimony in itself.”

Created in 2007, the Health and Safety Award for Contractors is given to those nominated by members of the British Ceramic Confederation who have made a determined effort to comply with the requirements of the Industry and shown that they possess a real commitment to the cause.

Steve Rogan, Sales Manager Central East, collected the award in October in Stoke on Trent. He says it is a tremendous achievement: “We have a good many customers and experience in the ceramics industry and this will hopefully propel the image of Chubb as a responsible employer to an even wider audience.”
