As one comes to terms with the latest restrictions announced by the Prime Minister, one shares the uncertainties of the ‘lockdown’ requirements.

BAFE had the news recently that fire alarm technicians are considered key workers, when they are responding to alarms or system failures. However, to date there is no other clarification regarding other services.

BAFE has set out to remind property managers of their obligations under legislation to maintain fire protection systems and equipment, but there is inevitably no certainty as to how this will be met under the new rules.

Construction work and safety

BAFE is a member of the Construction Industry Council who have issued a statement, regarding construction work and safety. They especially note the requirement to maintain work in the protected services, the lockdown “certainly doesn’t apply to those working in the health services, and utilities operations and maintenance for example.

It is the responsibility of each company to liaise with their clients to ascertain the requirements and accessibility for their work. Where maintenance schedules or activity is changed in conjunction with the client, this should always be documented for future reference.

BAFE will be actively working with and monitoring updates from Regulators and Government in co-operation with the Trade Associations, Fire Sector Federation, Certification Bodies and other organizations.
