Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) was called upon to respond to a large blaze at Balmoral Drive, Borehamwood on Friday 12 August, where a shed fire had spread to the nearby block of flats.
The three-storey block, owned by Clarion Housing Association, was evacuated of all residents as the fire impacted 21 flats, with 15 of them being destroyed. An emergency reception center was set up at a nearby leisure center where displaced residents received support with their accommodation needs, emergency provisions, and medical supplies. There were thankfully no reported casualties as a result of the fire.

Simon Tuhill, Assistant Chief Fire Officer for HFRS, said "The block involved has been significantly damaged, but crews have worked hard to stop any further spread." The fire service also confirmed that the roof had partially collapsed. According to ward councilor, Dan Ozarow, damage to the affected buildings is so bad that some residents will need to be permanently rehoused. Hertsmere Borough Council leader, Morris Bright, said that the fire spread from one building to another, describing it as a “shocking incident.”
The council also issued a statement saying that it was working "closely with partner agencies" and Clarion to ensure all those affected by the fire were being appropriately supported. It also praised the fire and rescue service personnel and the council workforce for their swift and professional response. The cause of the fire was thought to be accidental.
