A science museum located in Bristol city center, in Bristol, United Kingdom (UK) was evacuated, after its roof caught fire.
Avon Fire and Rescue Service were called to We The Curious in Millennium Square, Bristol, at about 14:00 on Saturday 9 April. All visitors to the museum were evacuated safely from the building.
joint investigation
Around 35 firefighters in five fire engines responded to the call and extinguished the fire. A joint investigation between Avon F&RS and the police is being carried out into the cause of the fire, which is currently thought to have originated in the roof space above the museum.
It was noted that 'key server systems' had been damaged in the fire, and that the museum would remain closed for the time being. Buildings nearby were also evacuated, and several roads were closed to manage public safety.
quick response
We The Curious issued a statement thanking the fire service for their quick response and for the support shown by neighboring businesses who stepped in to help with a wedding that was due to take place.
The statement reads, "Our building has sustained fire and water damage, and some of our key server systems are also affected, so we're currently without our phone or email systems."
Damage assessment
The statement adds, "We'll be closed on Sunday 10 April while we assess the damage and make a plan for the next few days, so we'll post further updates on this page once we know more. We'd also like to say a big thanks to Bristol Hotel, SS Great Britain, and Bristol Old Vic for supporting our wedding party today."
