As a global manufacturing company, science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) are an integral part of what Apollo does, which is why Apollo has dedicated STEM Ambassadors.

These ambassadors are volunteers from a range of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related jobs and disciplines who offer their time and enthusiasm to help bring STEM subjects to life and demonstrate the value of them in life and careers. It is an important element of Apollo’s corporate responsibility, enables them to give something back to the local community and hopefully increase the number of young people wanting to enter STEM careers, particularly girls.

Providing STEM Activities To Children

Apollo currently has five STEM Ambassadors who have been trained by Apollo’s local STEM hub in Winchester and are concentrating their efforts to provide STEM activities to children. One way that Apollo is doing this is with their partnership with local school, Warren Park Primary, to deliver three activities a year.

The first of these was on June 21st where three STEM Ambassadors spent the day with a group of year four students doing a variety of experiments such as raft and bridge building and ‘egg-naught’, looking at atmospheric re-entry. Teams were given two hours and winners got a STEM related prize. Feedback was amazing and school is looking forward to welcoming the team back soon.

STEM Based Career

Chris Ellis, one of Apollo’s STEM Ambassadors, says: “For me, this work is hugely satisfying, and I love sharing my passion for Engineering with the younger generations.”

Their curiosity and enthusiasm are incredibly motivating for all involved and it’s a welcome challenge to think of ways to explain how things work in order to help students understand and relate the subject to real world scenarios. I hope that by representing STEM well we can reach those students who may not have considered a STEM based career previously."
