Rail transport stands for sustainable mobility. In order to make rail vehicles even safer, fast and reliable fire detection systems are essential to protect people and minimize damage.

Automatic reporting systems are therefore used, with aspirating smoke detectors enabling early fire detection. These systems were first used 30 years ago. WAGNER will present the latest developments in this technology as well as other fire protection systems and innovations at InnoTrans 2024 in Berlin from September 24 to 27 in Hall 2.2, Stand 250 of Swissrail.

Early fire detection

TITANUS ® aspirating smoke detectors from WAGNER are used worldwide for early fire detection in passenger compartments, control cabinets, air conditioning systems and machine rooms . They continuously take air samples via a pipe system, detect the finest smoke particles in the pyrolysis phase and thus ensure the earliest possible fire detection.

The space-saving and unobtrusive systems integrate seamlessly into the design of both new and historic trains. Since the functional components are hidden behind panels and only small intake openings remain visible, the systems are protected against vandalism. Thanks to intelligent algorithms, they offer a high level of false alarm security and work very effectively despite air flow through air conditioning systems. The TITANUS ® systems are a state-of-the-art fire protection solution that is suitable for use in a wide variety of rail vehicle types.

Smoke extraction systems

The smoke extraction systems for rail vehicles have been on the market for 30 years - and are still in operation. WAGNER is continuously developing the technology. A new additional feature is the contamination indicator. This enables predictive and resource-efficient maintenance.

For technical areas where smoke detection is unsuitable, WAGNER also offers heat detectors that can be used as stand-alone solutions or integrated into existing fire alarm systems. Fire alarm control panels (BMZ) from WAGNER record fire protection messages on the train and control various functions such as raising the alarm, triggering extinguishing or switching off the air conditioning. All fire detectors and components are connected to the BMZ via a ring line, which guarantees permanent functionality. The panels have an Ethernet connection for integration into the train bus interfaces.

Fire alarm control panel

The new Rail 148, a further development of the proven WAGNER Rail 138 fire alarm control panel

The new Rail 148, a further development of the proven WAGNER Rail 138 fire alarm control panel, is technically up to date and optimally equipped for future detector and coupler generations. It has additional maintenance and diagnostic options such as an extended data memory with status messages.

Based on national and international standards and operator requirements, automatic extinguishing systems are increasingly being installed in addition to fire detection for effective fire fighting. Water mist systems are used in passenger compartments, sleeping cars and staff areas for automatic fire fighting. These limit the development of fire and smoke so that people can be evacuated safely. WAGNER uses a specially developed low-pressure technology that atomizes water into the finest droplets and thus achieves maximum cooling - and thus fire fighting - with minimal water consumption.

Endangering electrical systems

For closed areas such as control and switch cabinets and electrical systems, WAGNER offers gas extinguishing technology that works with the natural extinguishing gas nitrogen. The gases displace the oxygen and smother the fire. In combination with rapid fire detection, this technology enables safe and residue-free extinguishing without endangering the electrical systems.

The aerosol systems are therefore an important milestone for safety on the rails

A globally unique new development from WAGNER Rail now makes it possible to extinguish fires in open, well-ventilated technical rooms, even while traveling at high speed: with an aerosol extinguishing system. Thanks to this technology, trains do not have to slow down or interrupt their journey to extinguish fires in areas with transformers, power converters or diesel engines. The aerosol systems are therefore an important milestone for safety on the rails. These systems are ideal where the accommodation of gas extinguishing systems with containers is too complex or the openings in the protected areas are too large for reliable extinguishing with extinguishing gas.

Fire protection systems

Dr. Markus Müller, Managing Director of WAGNER Rail GmbH, reports: "With the smoke aspiration systems, we at WAGNER found our way into the rail transport market segment. Today, we are the market leader in aspirating smoke detectors with over 30,000 installations worldwide and have a broad portfolio for fire protection in rail transport.”

Our "Made in Germany" solutions are used all over the world: in trams, metros, urban and elevated railways, high-speed trains, passenger coaches, people movers and many more. Tourist attractions on the rails are also protected with WAGNER solutions - from the mountains to the desert. We are pleased to make sustainable mobility even safer with our fire protection systems. Sustainability is important to us and we promote it. In the EcoVadis sustainability ranking, WAGNER Rail was awarded the bronze award in 2024."
