Work to build a new fire station in York, has now been completed and from the 1st April 2014 firefighters have been operating from the new station at Kent Street.
The Kent Street station has been built as a replacement for the fire station at Clifford Street, which is out-dated and no longer fit for use.
The new station comprises of three vehicle bays and further facilities ranging from office space to a training tower, in the rear yard. It also provides much needed extra space for the vehicles and equipment used by fire crews.
The station will house one whole time crewed fire engine and a rescue boat and will also include a fire safety office and a community room which local community groups will be able to use. A further rescue boat will also be located on the River Ouse.
It has taken 37 weeks to build the station and it has been constructed to meet the “Very Good” level of the BREEAM sustainability standard.
The construction of the station was undertaken by Caddick Construction who have worked very hard to achieve an excellent standard and to finish the station in time to become operational in April as planned.
Head of Technical Services, Simon Garnett-Spence from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said; “The Service is very pleased with the new fire station. The contractors and the technical team worked very closely with our staff to achieve the best results and we feel that this new facility will provide enhanced training facilities for our staff and in turn will serve the communities of York very well.”
Work has already begun to arrange for the disposal of the redundant site at Clifford Street.
