Responding to fires in tall buildings will be a key focus at this year’s Emergency Services Show which returns to Hall 5 at the NEC, Birmingham, UK from 20th to 21st September 2017.
Russ Timpson, founder of the Tall Building Fire Safety Network will present a session in the Lessons Learnt seminar theatre (sponsored by UCLan) on tall building fires in the wake of the recent Grenfell Tower fire in London. London Ambulance Service NHS Trust will share its learnings from responding to the incident and the British Red Cross will explain how it worked with and supported the local community with a taskforce of volunteers.
The importance of the recovery phase will also be covered in a seminar on multi-agency response to such “Black Swan” events, presented by Luana Avagliano, Head of ResilienceDirect at the Cabinet Office. She will explain how best practice and digital technology can support the responder and recovery community.
Emotional impact of emergency medical response
In the new Health and Wellbeing Seminar, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service will present a session on supporting fire fighters dealing with the emotional impact of Emergency Medical Response. Two psychological therapists from The Fire Fighters Charity will also be speaking. The Charity (also exhibiting at the show) has a range of support services in place to help those affected by incidents like the Grenfell Tower including psychological rehabilitation programmes, recuperation breaks, and community-based advice, information and support. Sean Starbuck, National Officer for the Fire Brigades Union who will present a session entitled Fire Fighters’ Mental Health Matters says: “After the horror of Grenfell, operational and control firefighters will need support now more than ever.”
Live demonstrations and displays
In the outside exhibition area, Angloco will be displaying the UK’s tallest aerial fire-fighting appliance: a 45m Bronto FL45XRS aerial platform. Emergency One/Clan Tools will be demonstrating the Magirus M32L-AT turntable ladder featuring a telescopic five-section ladder with a 32 metre working height, and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service will be running sprinkler demonstrations. Meanwhile inside Crofton Engineering, specialist fabricator and installer of fire training buildings and live fire simulators, will be showcasing its most recent UK installations including a high-rise tower commissioned by Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service.

The latest fire safety guidance will be available from the Fire Industry Association and Fire Sector Federation. On their stand will be representations from BSI and British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association who will be giving advice on the use of sprinkler systems in both domestic and industrial buildings. Around the exhibition, leading names in lighting solutions, breathing apparatus, evacuation aids, PPE and fire-fighting and rescue equipment will be demonstrating their latest products.
CPD-accredited seminars
Free to attend, The Emergency Services Show enables visitors to see and handle the latest kit and speak to leading training providers. It features over 400 exhibitors, live demonstrations of vehicles and equipment and a full programme of CPD-accredited seminars covering PPE, research and development, innovations and the health and safety. Entry to the exhibition and seminars, as well as parking, is free. The NEC is linked to Birmingham International Station and Birmingham Airport and is directly accessible from the UK motorway network.
